A survey of the nature, development, diagnosis, and treatment of psychopathology viewed from a general-systems perspective (psychological, sociological, and biological). Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Explain the various facets of abnormal behavior, such as atypical behavior, personally and/or socially distressing thoughts/behavior, and culturally deviant thoughts/behavior
  2. Discuss the causality and treatment proposed by each of the major models of psychopathology (psychodynamic, learning, and biological theories/treatment) for the major mental disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, addictive disorders, dissociative disorders, somatoform disorders, eating and sleep disorders, paraphilias, and psychotic disorders
  3. Identify the major mental disorders categorized by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - 5

Evaluation Criteria:

 Introductory Assignment:  This assignment has 2 parts.  First, you will be required to participate in a discussion forum in which you will be expected to introduce yourself and provide a little personal information so that we can all get to know our classmates.  In the forum you will be required to reply to at least two other students, preferably indicating something interesting you learned about them from their posting.  I want to make sure you all know how to navigate discussion forum because we will be using it for topical discussions throughout the course.  As long as you put an honest effort into this task (i.e., you provide a reasonable two or three paragraphs) you will receive 10 points, i.e., full credit for this assignment.  Additional instructions can be found under the “Content” tab or “Discussion” tab on the Desire2learn course site. The second part of the assignment is the syllabus quiz which you will find under the “Content” and/or “Quizzes” tab as well.  

 Discussion Forums:  The discussion forums will focus on issues relevant to the chapter we are exploring at the time.  Although the textbook will provide some information on these topics, I may post additional readings or websites on the Desire2Learn course site that will be an interesting supplement to the text.  I will then post the question in a discussion forum.  You will be required to post a response to the question, and then to respond to a posting by two of your classmates.  Each discussion forum is worth 10 points, and you will be graded as such: 5 points for submitting your response/s and 5 points for your replies to other student’s posts.  Each aspect of your submission will be considered for grading as follows: you will receive 1 pt. for a meaningless response (for example:  Yes, I agree!), 2 pts. for simple and/or vague comments that are not clear, 5 pts. for good application of concepts, interesting and insightful comments.  Thus, if you respond thoughtfully to the initial question/s and thoughtfully to your classmates, you will receive all 10 pts. for the discussion question.   

 Online Quizzes:  There will be 10 online quizzes, each worth 20 points, most of the quizzes   have 20 - 25 questions.  They will be multiple choice quizzes, on the Desire2Learn course site, and you can take them as many times as you need to get a good grade.  Although you will be able to use your OER text on these exams, you will only hurt yourself if you do them in a surface manner i.e., just looking up the answers.  These exams will help prepare you for the final exam.  So, if you take them honestly, you will really know how comfortable you are with the information.  

 Final Exam:  The final exam is a 50 question, multiple choice exam which covers the entire course, sections one through five. IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the Coronavirus the final exam will be taken online like your other quizzes but you can take it only one time and this will be time-limited so it will be important to review.

            Final Exam:  The final exam is a 50 question multiple choice exam which covers the entire course, sections one through five. This exam you can take only once unlike your quizzes.  It will also be time-limited so there will not be time to look up answers.  Be sure to plan time for review.

Class Attendance/Participation

Although internet courses are intended to be flexible, it is very important that you treat this course like any other.  You must remain active throughout the semester in order to earn a good grade.  Class rosters will be updated by the end of the second week of the semester (50% refund period) to accurately reflect student enrollment in this course. Students who have not completed the introductions discussion and syllabus quiz by 6/10/22, may be administratively dropped at the point of enrollment verification.  Please refer to the Enrollment Verification Section of the Syllabus.

 

There will be other deadlines throughout the course, and if you will be out of town or especially busy at work it is your responsibility to check upcoming assignments and either do them ahead of time or make sure there will still be time to do them when you return or complete other responsibilities.  Please let me know if problems arise, I can easily get most assignments posted early if necessary.

 

I will be observing, facilitating, and assessing (i.e., grading) your contributions to the discussions.  I’m looking for insightful analysis, probing questions, and constructive suggestions to each other.  Keep thinking from the perspective – how can I add something useful?  It may be a personal experience, a quote from an article you read…be creative.  I may occasionally interject questions or comments to stimulate or redirect a discussion, but typically I leave the discussions to you and just make general comments to the whole class after I grade them. 

Late work policy: You have 3 late passes to use for the semester.  If you need to use one for any assignment or quiz you must send me an email and we will work out an adjusted due date.  Once you have completed late work you need to also email me so that I know to go back and update your score.

Extra Credit

There are 5 points extra credit available for this class.  This is offered as an incentive to anyone who completes the course evaluation which becomes available to complete via your d2l homepage.  This is the only extra credit offered because you have an unlimited amount or opportunities to complete the quizzes and late work is accepted with point deductions for lateness.

Honors Options: Upper Division Psychology Courses

Psychology Program

 

There are three honors option choices for students currently enrolled in an upper division psychology course. Option A requires students to design an original research proposal.  The culmination of the project is the submission of an eight – 14 page comprehensive APA-style research proposal.  Option B requires students to conduct a comprehensive literature review on an agreed upon topic. The culmination of this project is the submission of a ten to 15-page literature review. Option C is for students who have successfully completed a research proposal (Option A) in a previous psychology course and wishes to conduct the proposed research.  This options involves completing an original research project, culminating in the submission of a 14 – 24 page APA-style research paper.

 

The purpose of these projects is to immerse the student in the scientific aspect of psychology and is designed for exceptional students who wish to pursue an intensive and independent research opportunity.   In order to take advantage of this option a student must have a 3.2 cumulative GPA (or a 3.5 high school GPA if a first semester freshman or dual enrolled student) and a minimum writing level of 6.

 

The honors option is a multi-step process:

 

  1. Students must contact their professor within the first two weeks of class and discuss their intention to complete the honor’s option. This contact must be done on the first week of class for variable length classes (i.e. 14-week, 12-week, and 8-week)

 

  1. Student must meet (at least once) with the faculty member to discuss their research idea (option A), paper topic (option B), or plan for completion of their research proposal (option C). This meeting should take place no later than the 4rd week of the semester (3rd week for 14-week and 12-week courses; 2nd week for 8-week courses).

 

  1. Option A: Students will submit an eight to 14-page APA style research proposal. A research proposal consists of a review of the literature relevant to their specific area of research, as well as a detailed description of the research design and methodology to be used for data collection.   The research proposal must be submitted no later than the 14th week of class (12th week for 14-week classes, 10th week for 12-week classes, and 7th week for an 8-week class).

 

          Option B: Students will submit a ten to 15-page literature review on an agreed upon topic. The review must be submitted no later than the 14th week of class (12th week for 14-week classes, 10th week for 12-week classes, and 7th week for an 8-week class).

 

          Option C: Students will submit a 14 – 24 page completed research paper (including the previously approved research proposal) using formal APA format for an experimental investigation.  This includes:

 

  • Abstract
  • Literature review
  • Discussion of procedures and the research methodology
  • Analysis of the data
  • Discussion of the results
  • References
  • Appendix (if appropriate)

 

The final research paper must be submitted no later than the 14th week of class (12th week for 14-week classes, 10th week for 12-week classes, and 7th week for an 8-week class).

 

 

  1. Honors credit will be awarded if the student earns a minimum of a 3.0 in the class overall, and a minimum of 81% on the chosen option. Failure to meet either of these criteria will result in no honors credit being awarded.  The honors credit is independent of the final course grade.

 

Students should be aware that conducting honors option is a demanding undertaking, both in terms of time and effort.  It requires students to review and integrate a substantial body of theoretical and experimental literature. Moreover, students must be able to clearly communicate their ideas in a professional-style scientific manuscript.  Students who choose this option must be extremely motivated, organized, and self-sufficient.
