Description

Students will develop the skills, principles and applications of gas tungsten arc welding. Welds will be done on different thickness of ferrous and non-ferrous metals in all positions. Proper material cleaning, fit up and safety are also introduced. (F,Sp)

Requisites

Prerequisite Courses: Minimum 2.0 in (WELD 103 or AUTM 101 or AUTB 114)
Placement Scores: Reading Level 3 and Writing Level 2

Course Note: Students need to bring their own safety glasses, pliers, leather welding gloves and leather work boots to start welding on the first day of class.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Set up and adjust the power source for TIG welding on Mild steel, Stainless steel, Cast Iron, Aluminum, Magnesium, Titanium, and Copper.
  2. Demonstrate safety  procedures used in TIG Welding (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding).
  3. Explain the classification system used for tungsten electrodes.
  4. Prepare a Tungsten electrode for the material you are welding on.
  5. Clean the material and set up the material in preparation for welding.
  6. Identify different metals and procedures for welding ferrous and nonferrous metals.
  7. Define metallurgical terminology used in welding.
  8. Explain different weld defects and their causes.
  9. Demonstrate methods of fit up and the reduction of distortion.

Given lectures and lab demonstrations on the topics, the student will be assessed on each of these outcomes through traditional exams, quizzes, and laboratory assignments. Given  demonstrations by the instructor and many lab practice welds, the student will be assessed to industry standards by the American Welding Society D1.1 Welding Code Visual Acceptance with 80% accuracy.

The standards for the course outcomes will be measured against the text used for the course. A successful student will achieve a score of 70% or better on these assessments.

Enrollment Verification

Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Instructors will update class rosters by the 8th day after the start date of sections less than 8 weeks long, and by the 15th day after the start date of sections 8 weeks or longer to accurately reflect student enrollment in each course. Students who have not attended by these dates may be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.

Course Practices

SAFETY RULES

  1. Leather type shoes are required to protect students from welding sparks, etc. (no canvas type or open type shoe will be accepted in the welding lab.)
  2. Long sleeve shirts and long pants with no cuffs are required. Cotton shirts are recommended. Synthetic material will not resist sparks and are potentially dangerous.
  3. Safety glasses are to be worn at all times in the welding lab. No Exceptions!
  4. Welding Hoods or Goggles are to be worn with respect to their proper operations. No Exceptions!
  5. Aprons are required to be worn for Arc Welding and Cutting Operations.
  6. Cooling of hot metals is to be done in the cooling tanks only, not the wash area.
  7. No student is to operate unfamiliar equipment without first checking with the instructor.
  8. Return unused metal to its proper location when cleaning up.
  9. Place all welded scrap in the scrap bin when cleaning up.
  10. Area is to be swept and cleaned in each booth and the work bench area where students worked in the lab before leaving the lab.
  11. People using grinders must wear safety glasses and full shields when grinding.
  12. It is recommended to wear ear protection in the welding lab.

** Any student not adhering to the above safety rules will not be allowed to participate in the welding lab.
