Basic Mechanical Drafting

This course teaches the fundamental concepts of drafting and design using sketches and manual drafting skills. The student will learn the basics of orthographic projection, lettering, sketching, dimensioning techniques, and much more. (F,Sp)

Placement Scores: Reading Level 3 and Writing Level 2 and (Math Level 3 or (minimum 2.0 in MATH 105 or MATH 106))

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

    1. Explain the rules and fundamentals of sketching techniques.
    2. Demonstrate various line types (alphabet of lines).
    3. Sketch using half, full, and twice size proportions.
  2. Orthographic Sketching
    1. Describe the basic principles of orthographic projection.
    2. Use numbering techniques for projection.
    3. Describe the six common orthographic views of an object.
    4. Explain Third Angle and First Angle projection.
  3. Sectional Views
    1. Sketch full, half, broken, removed, and revolved views of a given part.
    2. Explain the fundamentals and the rules of sectioning.
  4. Auxiliary Views
    1. Describe the purpose and use of auxiliary views.
    2. Sketch primary auxiliary views using projection and labeling techniques.
    3. Use sketching techniques to find the true size of an in inclined surface.
  5. Isometric Views
    1. Describe the fundamental principles of ISO views.
    2. Explain ISO views and ISO visualization.
    3. Sketch ISO views and explain their use in society.
  6. Lettering
    1. Explain the importance of lettering.
    2. Create letters and numbers that are proportionate and neat.
    3. Maintain a lettering consistency within each project.
  7. Dimensioning
    1. Describe the fundamental rules of dimensioning.
    2. Explain the types of dimensioning; point to point, coordinate, tabular, ordinate.
    3. Describe the use of aligned and unidirectional dimensions.
    4. Describe the purpose and functionality of drafting symbols.
  8. CAD
    1. Describe different types of Computer Aided Design software.
    2. Describe parametric modeling.
    3. Describe the purpose and functionality of computer aided design.
    4. Create drawings using Computer Aided Design software.

6" triangles (30-60 and 45), straight edge, mechanical pencil and eraser

Enrollment Verification

Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Instructors will update class rosters by the 8th day after the start date of sections less than 8 weeks long, and by the 15th day after the start date of sections 8 weeks or longer to accurately reflect student enrollment in each course. Students who have not attended by these dates may be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.
