Description

This course explores techniques of web page construction using HTML and CSS languages. Students will construct individual web pages using HTML to contain graphics, text, and web forms with presentation controlled by CSS style sheets. Within a team, students will demonstrate their understanding and application of the concepts introduced during the semester. (F, Sp, Su)

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate web pages for appropriate use of design principles, usability and accessibility.
  2. Create original web pages using HTML and CSS involving a text editor.
  3. Use the W3C Validator to create standards compliant web pages.
  4. Develop a themed web site demonstrating proper web design skills.

Software:  Filezilla FTP Client or other FTP Client.  Notepad ++, Sublime Text or other Text Editor

Storage: Portable storage media of your choice, including but not limited to USB flash drives or Online storage. 1GB media recommended

Student Electronic Access to Grades

D2L is the College’s Course Management System which includes a gradebook function allowing students access to their grades in order to receive timely and meaningful feedback on their progress in the course at any time. Whenever practicable, results for graded items should be posted electronically within 48 hours after the instructor has completed the grading process for the items, and final grades for the course should be entered no later than the specified grading day.

Class Attendance/Participation

Although attendance is not taken in this course, a student is expected to participate in all sessions.  This includes attending all traditional class meetings or regularly participating on the discussion boards for on-line classes and turning in fully completed acceptable quality assignments. If a student cannot participate in class due to illness or for extenuating circumstances, the student has the responsibility to notify the instructor. Even when the instructor is notified of the circumstances, that in no way relives the student of the responsibility for completing all work in the course to the satisfaction of the instructor. If continued attendance is not possible, it is the student’s responsibility to drop the course within the dates and conditions defined in the schedule book in order to receive a withdrawal "W" rather than a "0" grade.Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours per course credit each week on the weekly lessons (approximately 6 to 9 hours total). Each week you will read your textbook and complete an assignment over the content.  It is VERY IMPORTANT to stay on schedule.

Students are expected to submit all assignments, participate in all interactivity and take all exams according to the Schedule (or make other arrangements well in advance of the scheduled due date). Failure to do so may result in academic penalty or withdrawal from the class. Students will want to check with their advisor regarding the impact of receiving a grade below 2.0 or a W (student or instructor-initiated) on financial aid or the attainment of certificates or degrees. International students may risk their visa status or be in non-compliance with INS regulations.

There may be weekly discussion board postings that will also be counted as attendance and may be graded.

Late Classwork

Students are responsible for following the course schedule. Your instructor will notify you of any changes to the schedule using the following methods: D2L announcements, D2L Mail and in the classroom (if the class meets on-campus).

Late homework is accepted and is marked off 1 point for each calendar day that an assignment is late, unless arrangements are made in advance with the student and instructor.  An assignment that is 10 days past due will receive a zero for the assignment score.

Assignments are due at 8AM on the posted due date in the course schedule.

Homework will be graded on a first come, first served basis after the posted due date. Late homework will be graded as time permits.

From time-to-time, life (work or family) may get in the way of your studies. Should this occur, contact you instructor immediately by phone, e-mail, instant messaging, etc. to ensure you won't lose points on any missed homework.

Exams, tests and quizzes cannot be made up after the due date, however, accommodations may be made in advance of the deadline for students with schedule conflicts.  Contact your instructor well in advance of the conflict.

Enrollment Verification

Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Instructors will update class rosters by the 8th day after the start date of sections less than 8 weeks long, and by the 15th day after the start date of sections 8 weeks or longer to accurately reflect student enrollment in each course. Students who have not attended by these dates may be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.

Netiquette (or network etiquette) is defined as a set of principles developed to express courtesy and to help people act appropriately while sending e-mail and using the Internet.  All of us (instructor and students) will demonstrate netiquette and civility whenever interacting with each other.  Please use standard "Business English" (complete sentences) and not jargon or slang for all communications.
