Description

This course provides an introduction to computer manipulation of digital images using Adobe Photoshop through projects, learning activities, assessments and exploration of resources. (F,Sp,Su)

Requisites

Prerequisite Course: Minimum 2.5 in (ARTS 102 or PHOT 118) or concurrently
Placement Scores: Reading Level 5 and Writing Level 6

Course Note: Adobe Photoshop CC software is used. Online students are required to have semester-long access to Adobe Photoshop CC to complete their assignments. Students have access to these in the LCC TLC 100 Computer Lab.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate fundamental knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and its working environment.
  2. Understand primary document set up and saving techniques in Adobe Photoshop including image types, image modes, file size and resolution.
  3. Apply selection techniques in Adobe Photoshop using selection tools.
  4. Solve page layout challenges by using layers to organize your images.
  5. Utilize type tools in Adobe Photoshop to apply typography to page layouts.
  6. Apply blending modes and filter effects in Adobe Photoshop.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of color management and correction techniques in Adobe Photoshop.
  8. Apply Adobe Photoshop image adjustment and retouching tools.
  9. Create web graphics and digital assets while understanding the basics of web design in Adobe Photoshop.
  10. Evaluate image layouts in Photoshop while identifying proper techniques and usage of Adobe Photoshop tools and capabilities.
  11. Develop a portfolio while working in Adobe Photoshop on a variety of projects.
  12. Demonstrate an overall understanding of Adobe Photoshop by completing a comprehensive assessment project at the end of the course.

Enrollment Verification

Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Instructors will update class rosters by the 8th day after the start date of sections less than 8 weeks long, and by the 15th day after the start date of sections 8 weeks or longer to accurately reflect student enrollment in each course. Students who have not attended by these dates may be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.

RULES AND GUIDELINES FOR USE OF THE ART, DESIGN AND MULTIMEDIA PROGRAM COMPUTER LABS:

Use of computer resources is a privilege extended by Lansing Community College to students and employees, as a tool to enhance the educational process and promote the basic mission of the college. Anyone who uses this for illegal activities or to contravene the basic mission of the college may have their privileges revoked and may be subject to prosecution.

Only authorized users may use the lab, its equipment and materials. "Authorized" means the user's name is on the current Users List provided by the Program Coordinator to lab personnel. No exceptions will be made to this rule. (Staff with special needs should contact the Computer Graphics Program Coordinator.)

All authorized users must present a current LCC ID card (driver's licenses, etc. are NOT acceptable substitutes) to lab personnel before entering the lab.

Users will follow the directions of the lab staff, in accordance with the current lab policies. These policies may change and such changes will be posted on the door of the lab.

Users are limited to one hour of computer use when others are waiting. Use of scanners may be limited to as little as fifteen minutes. Users may not change workstations during a lab session without specific permission to do so from the lab staff.  If you discover a problem with the hardware or software, please report it to the lab aide or your instructor at once. Use of more than one station is strictly prohibited.

Resource materials are for in-lab use only and may not be removed from the labs at any time.

Users may not alter any files or directories on the hard disks, must store their personal files to their own disks, and must observe all software licensing agreements. Copying of software is illegal and those who steal software will be prosecuted.

Users may not use software applications other than those provided by the LCC Art, Design and Multimedia Program. Aside from the danger of viruses, most software packages alter the system, install hidden files and fonts, and change various settings when used. Thus, any software that is to be used, even from  personal floppies, must be approved by the lab technician well in advance of the use.

Users may not plug or unplug anything from the computers or peripherals, including headphones, mouse, etc. Some computer ports are very sensitive to static, and even bumping cable could cause problems. (Special sound stations have been set up for those who need to edit sound--ask lab aide.)

Users may not play music CDs on college computers. CDs severely impede the performance of the computer, and since users may not plug or unplug headphones from the back of the computer, the sound may disturb other users.

Users will be held responsible for any damage to lab equipment. Damage or loss of pens will result in the user being billed for the cost of said pen ($90.00).

FAILURE TO FOLLOW LAB RULES AND GUIDELINES LISTED ABOVE WILL RESULT IN THE LOSS OF LAB PRIVILEGES.

How we run things: the Open Computer Graphics Labs Policies

Before you enter the lab:

  • Check in at GB 113, and give your validated LCC ID to the lab aide. At some times the staff may be in one of the labs solving a problem. Ring the bell, or seek the staff in one of the other rooms, 108, 110, 112, 114, or 116. The staff will keep your ID until you check out.
  • The lab aide will check to see if you are on the list. You must sign a rules sheet upon entering the lab for the first time each semester.
  • The lab aide will assign you a seat and give you a card with the number of the station on it. That card is your proof you are in the lab legitimately. Stick it to the velcro square at the upper left corner of your monitor, where all can see it.

To check out a manual, or other resource material, fill out a check out slip.  These materials may not leave the lab at any time.

THE LAB AIDES ARE NOT YOUR PERSONAL TUTORS. They may answer general questions, but they are there to look after the lab, not the users.

When the lab is crowded:

  • No one will be forced to give up a computer who has not used it for at least an hour.
  • The user who signed in earliest will be the first asked to leave.
  • Anyone who leaves a computer for more than ten minutes may be considered finished, and the station may be assigned to the next user.

Lab aides are the final arbiter of how lab time will be distributed fairly.

Use of Printers
Use of printers is limited to ONLY classwork for Art, Design and Multimedia classes which meet in the lab! Special projects may be okayed by your instructor, or the CG program coordinator. You MUST print a proof to a black and white printer and check it carefully before printing to a color printer. Color printers are for final copy ONLY--one color print per project, ever. If there is a problem, you must get permission to print again from your instructor or from the Lab Technicians.

Users may not use papers brought in from outside the lab, except in special cases approved by the  Lab Technician.
If you discover a problem with any hardware or software, please report it to the lab aide or your instructor AT ONCE.
