Description

This course prepares students for ASE and State of Michigan certification testing in braking systems. Topics include theory and operation, maintenance, diagnosis, disassembly, inspection, and repair of disc and drum braking systems, anti-lock brake/traction control systems, and related brake components. This course meets NATEF Master Automotive Service Technology (MAST) standards for brakes. (F, Sp)

Requisites

Prerequisite Courses: Minimum 2.0 in ((AUTM 111 or concurrently) or AUTM 110)
Placement Scores: (Reading Level 3 or ENGL 098 concurrently) and Writing Level 2 and (Math Level 3 or minimum 2.0 in MATH 105 or MATH 106)

Course Note

Students need to bring their own safety glasses and dress in appropriate work clothes to start working in the lab on the first day of class.  Books are included as part of the course fee.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Identify issues with vehicle brake systems.
  2. Diagnose general brake system problems.
  3. Based on diagnostics, repair general brake system problems.
  4. Diagnose issues with hydraulic brakes.
  5. Based on diagnostics, repair hydraulic brakes.
  6. Diagnose drum brake issues.
  7. Based on diagnostics, repair drum brake issues.
  8. Diagnose disc brake issues.
  9. Based on diagnostics, repair disc brake.
  10. Identify issues with brake power-assist units.
  11. Based on diagnostics, repair power-assist units.
  12. Diagnose problems with wheel bearings, parking brakes, electrical and other related systems.
  13. Based on diagnostics, repair related systems.
  14. Diagnose problems with antilock brake systems (ABS), traction control systems (TCS), and electronic stability control (ESC) systems.
  15. Based on diagnostics, repair electronic braking control systems.
  16. Use tools and equipment needed to service vehicle drive trains.
  17. Prepare a vehicle for service.
  18. Prepare the vehicle to return to the customer.

Materials

Tools, Equipment, or Apparel (required of the student)

  1. Safety Glasses with ANSI Z87 rating.
  2. Work appropriate long pants and shirt with sleeve.
  3. Leather boots or shoes required.

Enrollment Verification

Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Instructors will update class rosters by the 8th day after the start date of sections less than 8 weeks long, and by the 15th day after the start date of sections 8 weeks or longer to accurately reflect student enrollment in each course. Students who have not attended by these dates may be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.
