Description


Second in two-course sequence, following MATH 121. Topics include right triangle trigonometry, trigonometric functions, graphs, identities and equations, inverse trig functions, laws of sines/cosines, polar coordinates, vectors, systems of linear equations, matrices, sequences, series, conic sections, parametric equations, permutations, combinations, and binomial theorem. Degree credit may not be earned in both MATH 121/122 and MATH 126. (F,Sp,Su)

Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the trigonometric functions.
  2. Apply the properties of trigonometric functions and sketch their graphs both by hand and with the aid of a graphing calculator.
  3. Apply trigonometric identities and formulas, and solve trigonometric equations and triangles.
  4. Prove trigonometric identities.
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of inverse trigonometric functions.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of a vector and its relationship to triangles; apply vectors to solving problems in the physical sciences.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding of vector properties and operations.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of matrix properties and operations; obtain RREF of a matrix by Gaussian Elimination.
  9. Apply various techniques for solving systems of equations (including the use of matrices).
  10. Identify and sketch the conic sections by hand; find center, vertices and foci.
  11. Graph polar coordinates and equations by hand; convert equations between rectangular and polar form. 
  12. Graph parametric equations; convert equations between rectangular and parametric form; analyze projectile motion.
  13. Demonstrate an understanding of sequences and series; identify and compute arithmetic and geometric sequences and series.
  14. Apply the fundamental counting principle; identify and compute the total number of permutations and combinations.  Apply the binomial theorem.
  15. Expand positive integer powers of binomials using the binomial theorem.
  16. Use the graphing calculator to sketch graphs of equations in rectangular, polar, and parametric form, conpute permutations and combinations, generate and graph arithetic, geometric, and recursively defined sequences and to find their sums and/or partial sums, and to obtain RREF of a matrix.

A graphing calculator is required. The TI-84 is recommended and supported.  The TI-83 will work as well.  Students planning on going on past Calculus 2, may want to consider purchasing the TI-89, 92, or Nspire, however these calculators are not supported in this class so it will be up to the student to learn how to use them.

Student Electronic Access to Grades

Desire2Learn (D2L) is the College’s Course Management System which includes a gradebook function allowing students access to their grades in order to receive timely and meaningful feedback on their progress in the course at any time. These grades will align with the Evaluation Criteria listed in this syllabus. D2L is accessed through the MyLCC page.

Whenever practicable, results for graded items should be posted electronically within 48 hours after the instructor has completed the grading process for the items, and final grades for the course should be entered no later than the specified grading day.

Course Policies


Format of This Class

You can get an idea of the format by reviewing the course calendar. 

On most non-test days, we start off with....

  • you dropping off your assigned skills homework when you come in. 
  • Class discussion / lecture over new material. 
  • After the discussion you try some  in class activity problems.
  • Finally you are assigned your next skills assignment, homework, and reading or test review for the next day.

 

On Test Review Days

  • I answer questions mostly over the test review guide.
  • My SI and I help you with your unit quizzes and extra credit in D2L

 

On Test Days

  • You spend the first 80 minutes taking the test.
  • During the remaining class time, you take the test again in your group.  You will be able to discuss answers and attempt to come to an agreement on the correct answers and turn the group tests in for more points.  You will be allowed to use resources such as each other, other groups, your book, and the internet.  You will not be allowed to use me or the SI to help you.
  • Later in the day or the next day, you can look online for your test grade and the solutions.  A link to the solutions will be posted in D2L.

Class Attendance/Participation

A large portion of your grade comes from turning in skills homework in class and in class activities, so it is vital that you attend class regularly and you come in prepared.  If you miss a skills homework occasionally, do not let that stop you from coming to class. If you must miss a class, but you did the skills homework, send in your homework before the next regular class so you can still get credit for it.  How to send in your skills homework will vary depending on the type.  Please communicate with me via D2L e-mail if you must miss a class.

Makeup Tests

You are allowed no more than 2 makeup tests in this course (or one makeup test and MyMathLab homework to replace a second test).  There is not much time to makeup work, so please make every effort to stay current and get help early if you need it.  If you must miss a test or you do poorly on a test that you took, make sure you do the corresponding extra credit after you are caught up with everything else related to the unit.  After you get everything on the extra credit correct, you may send me an e-mail inside of D2L asking me to put a makeup test in the Assessment Center for you.  I may ask to go over a few more topics with you before submitting a makeup test, if it seems necessary to improve your chances of success on the makeup test.

Dropping the Course

If you miss 2 or more classes or graded items in any one category without communicating with your instructor, you will likely be dropped.  However if you know you want to drop, please take responsibility to do so rather than counting on an administrative drop.  Also, if you miss assignments or classes, please discuss the situation with your instructor.  I would like to help you stay in the course if that is possible. The best way to communicate with me other than in person is through the Desire to Learn e-mail system.

Extra Credit

There will be 6 extra credit assessments worth 5 points each in our course site (one for each unit and one for the final).  You should use these extra credits as extra practice to prepare for exams.

If you need to take a makeup exam, I require that you do the extra credit to perfection first so that you increase your chances of doing well on the makeup exam.  I would be happy to help you with this task if needed.

Grades will be posted in D2L and updated regularly.  Questions about how to view your grades in D2L can be answered in class or in office hours.

Transfer Potential

The Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) and the MACRAO Transfer Agreement simplify the transfer of students from one Michigan institution to another. MACRAO will be replaced by the MTA which is effective for students entering Fall 2014 or later. Students who started prior to Fall 2014 will be able to complete the MACRAO Transfer Agreement through Summer 2019, or they may complete the MTA requirements. Study Time

This is a four credit course.  For most college classes, you can expect to spend 2-3 hours per week outside of class for every hour in class.  It should take most students 8 – 12 hours per week of study time to be successful in this class.  If your background is weak, you can still be successful, if you study extra to make up for any areas where you are deficient.  Don't be afraid to ask for help!

Honors Option

An Academic Honors Option is a form of instructional agreement whereby a student can earn an Honors designation on his or her transcript by completing one or more approved enrichment assignments in a non-Honors course.  This course allows qualified students to complete Academic Honors Options.  The Academic Honors Option assignment(s) designed by faculty for this course are explained below.  If you elect to complete this work and do so successfully, your achievement will be noted on your official LCC transcript.  Please be aware that Academic Honors Options DO NOT earn Honors course credit.

Students seeking an Honors Option may complete one of the following assignment choices in addition to all other course work assigned by the instructor:
1.   One or more substantial mathematics projects assigned by the instructor.  Mathematics projects should either extend the mathematical content of the course or apply the mathematics within a new context.
2.   An extensive research paper on a topic germane to the course and approved by the section instructor.

  • Your Classmates: Many students find that working with classmates outside of class can be helpful for getting homework done and preparing for tests.  It is good to attempt problems on your own and then get together with others and explain difficult problems to each other.  Doing this, both helps the student struggling with a problem and it reinforces concepts for the student who is doing the explaining.
  • Your Teacher: I hold regular office hours, listed near the top of this syllabus and sometimes it can be arranged to meet at other times.

Make sure you get help when you need it.  It is vital that you grasp all concepts and stay current with the material.

Rearranged Text

I like to teach trigonometry using the Unit Circle Approach, but the textbook that our school has adopted does not use this approach. Both approaches are perfectly valid and there are numerous textbooks available for either choice. However, to introduce the topic of trigonometry in a way that makes the most sense to me and in a way that helps students understand my explanations better, I have rearranged the chapter 6 of the book. You will find access to the rearranged text in our course site.

MyLab & Mastering

Although MyMathLab is not required for this course, it is a useful way of getting guided help and many students already have an account from their Math 121 course. You don't need a course id because you sign up through D2L. You can find instructions for registering here.  If you do the MyMathLab homework and your homework score is higher than your lowest test, you may replace your lowest test score with your MyMathLab score.  If you are unsure of whether or not you want to use MyMathLab you may sign up for a 2 week free temporary account so you can try it out before purchasing.  If you have already purchased access and you decide you don't want to use the access, you may sell your access to someone else as long as you have not activated your account.
