This is an introductory course exploring the elements and principles of three-dimensional design. The course will examine traditional and narrative-based potentials of materials and objects. (F,Sp)


Prerequisite: Minimum 2.5 in ARTS 102 or concurently and Reading Level 5 and Writing Level 6

Course Note: Students purchase own art supplies and materials.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Use the elements and principles of 3D design to convey specific artistic intent
  2. Create a focal point or area of interest
  3. Control figure ground/relationships both within individual objects and within site-specific environments
  4. Analyze and apply the elements and principles of 3D design as used in historical and current three-dimensional works of art
  5. Describe how manipulating the boundaries of objects alters the factors of function, meaning, and structure
  6. Recognize, distinguish and manipulate attributes of space
  7. Demonstrate the ability to contextualize and de-contextualize the meanings of objects and the actual spaces they occupy through the placement of objects in various locations
  8. Analyze the relationship between interior and exterior spaces occupied by volumes in actual space by manipulating the properties of inside/outside
  9. Utilize the textural and tactile qualities of materials to contribute to the meaning, function, and/or context of the work created
  10. Demonstrate a working knowledge of basic 3D design materials
  11. Analyze differences between shapes, masses and volumes
  12. Demonstrate the ability to work within the set parameters of a design problem by following specific project instructions
  13. Generate ideas and discuss their process and solutions in both small groups and critiques
  14. Communicate ideas visually through preliminary sketches and/or maquettes

The MACRAO Transfer Agreement will be replaced by the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) which will take effect for students entering Fall 2014 or later.  Students who started prior to Fall 2014 will be able to complete the MACRAO Transfer Agreement through Summer 2019, or they may complete the MTA requirements.

Enrollment Verification

Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Class rosters will be updated by the end of the second week of the semester (50% refund period) to accurately reflect student enrollment in this course. Students who have not attended by the end of week two will be administratively dropped and responsible for any required tuition and fee charges.
