Description

This course continues the development of skills necessary for interpreter evaluation/qualification. Students will be provided with simulated testing situations using interactive videotapes of hearing/deaf individuals requiring students to interpret/transliterate. Designed for students intending to become sign language interpreters. (F)

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. Interpret/transliterate situations and content at an increasingly advanced level.
  2. Discuss vocabulary register choices and expressive and receptive skills.
  3. Proficiently apply interpreting and transliterating skills in:
    1. Clarifying statements
    2. Using classifiers
    3. Appropriate use of and recognition of eye gaze
    4. Appropriate body shifting for dialogues
    5. Employing use of space
    6. Visualization techniques
    7. Phrasing and pausing
    8. Closure and comprehension

Evaluation

Student Electronic Access to Grades

Results for graded items should be posted electronically within 48 hours after the instructor has completed the grading process for the items, and final grades for the course should be entered no later than the specified grading day.

Enrollment Verification

Instructors will verify participation in a course by the 8th day after the start date of sections less than 8 weeks long, and by the 15th day after the start date of sections 8 weeks or longer. Students who have not participated will be dropped from the course and may be responsible for any non-refundable fees.

Academic Advising

Academic Advisors help students identify and update programs based on career goals, and assist in building semester course MAPs (degree plans). They are available to discuss transfer options and ensure students are meeting the requirements for graduation. Course Specific Information

Technology Use: The following statement may be found in the LCC Course Schedule Book for the current semester:

Students should be prepared to use computer technology in their coursework, including gaining regular access to the Desire2Learn course site associated with each class. Every section at LCC has a D2L site associated with it that may be used by the instructor as a mandatory part of the class. D2L can be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection and Web browsing software, including computers in the Learning Commons Computer Lab in the TLC Building. Student D2L Orientation training is available online.

Late Tests and Assignments must be made up within one class period. Excused absences, with documentation, are illness, death in family, & jury duty.

Detailed Outline of Course Content and Sequencing

Students will be videotaped and evaluated weekly on interpreting and transliterating the interactive paragraphs presented on videotape.  Students will be given vocabulary and tested weekly as presented from the previous week's videotapes and/or in-class discussions.
